SUMMARY:Gun Storage Check Week: A Moment to Support Veterans
DESCRIPTION:June 1–7\, 2025 is Gun Storage Check Week\, a national initiative encouraging all gun owners to review how they store firearms. For Veterans\, who are more likely to own firearms and face increased risk of death by suicide\, safe storage is especially important. \nAccording to the 2024 VA Suicide Prevention Report\, firearms were used in 73.5% of Veteran deaths by suicide in 2022\, compared to 52.2% among non-Veterans. Most attempts to die by suicide using a firearm are fatal\, leaving no time for rescue. But small actions\, like using a lock\, can introduce lifesaving delays that allow for second thoughts or intervention. \nSafe Storage Options\n\nCable Locks: Affordable and easy to use; can prevent unintentional use and provide quick deterrence in a crisis.\nLock Boxes: Portable and discreet; some use keys\, codes\, or biometrics for added security.\nFull-Size Safes: Secure multiple firearms and protect against theft or unauthorized access.\nOffsite Storage: A helpful short-term option during mental health challenges or transitions (follow local laws).\n\nSafe storage means keeping firearms unloaded\, locked\, and stored separately from ammunition. These steps reduce the risk of suicide\, accidents\, and theft\, especially in households with children\, teens\, or individuals in crisis. \nHow You Can Help\n\nNormalize conversations about storage with Veterans and family members.\nShare free resources from NSSF\, Project ChildSafe\, and Gun Storage Check.\nMake firearm storage checks part of annual safety routines—like replacing smoke alarm batteries.\n\nTogether\, communities can help prevent Veteran deaths by suicide\, one storage conversation at a time.

SUMMARY:Integrating Trauma Informed Care into Suicide Response (ITIC)
DESCRIPTION:Training Details \nDuration2 hours \nCostFree \nApprovalsThis activity is approved for the following credit: AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™\, ANCC\, ASWB\, and AAPA Category 1 CME. \nQuantity2 hours CE \nProviderPitt PERU and UPMC Western Behavioral Health at Safe Harbor \nAudience \nOpen to all community members\, Veterans and their families\, and practitioners across healthcare\, behavioral health\, social services\, education\, first response\, and peer support. \nDescription \nQPR teaches practical skills that help you become an effective “gatekeeper” who notices warning signs\, starts a caring conversation\, and connects someone to help. You will learn the three core actions: \n\nQuestion: Initiate a compassionate conversation to explore the individual’s thoughts and feelings about suicide.\nPersuade: Encourage the person to seek and accept professional help.\nRefer: Connect the individual with the proper resources and support services.\n\nConcepts are reinforced with clear examples that fit daily life at home\, in clinics\, and in community settings. The training aligns with best practices\, including asking directly about suicide\, using non-stigmatizing language\, and linking to 988 and local resources. Because suicide affects many groups\, including Veterans and their families\, QPR builds confidence to act early\, reduce risk\, and support safety while professional care is arranged. \nOutcomes\nParticipants grow comfortable asking directly about suicide\, increase accuracy recognizing clues and warning signs\, and improve the speed and quality of referrals to crisis and community care\, including 988 and local providers. \nLearning Objectives \n\nRecognize common verbal\, behavioral\, and situational warning signs of suicide\nDifferentiate helpful from unhelpful language when asking about suicide.\nDemonstrate the QPR steps to encourage help-seeking and hope.\nApply a brief referral plan that links to 988 and local resources.\nCollaborate with family\, peers\, and providers to support short-term safety.\n\nRegister Now \nQuestions?
