April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM)—an important opportunity to raise awareness about sexual violence, emphasize the importance of consent and healthy relationships, and support survivors, particularly veterans impacted by Military Sexual Trauma (MST).

What is Military Sexual Trauma (MST)?

Military Sexual Trauma (MST) refers to sexual assault or threatening sexual harassment experienced during military service. MST includes unwanted sexual activities or contact, coercion, being pressured into sexual situations, or threats related to sexual activities. MST can occur at any time during service, whether on duty or off, on base or off. Importantly, MST affects individuals of all genders, ages, races, sexual orientations, and branches of service.

The Impact of MST

The effects of MST can deeply affect veterans, both physically and emotionally. Symptoms may include:

  • Persistent nightmares or disturbing memories
  • Feelings of anxiety or depression
  • Difficulties feeling safe or trusting others
  • Struggles with anger, irritability, or emotional numbness
  • Increased use of substances, such as alcohol or drugs
  • Sleep disturbances or physical health issues

MST’s impacts can persist for years, influencing relationships, work, daily life, and overall mental wellness. However, it’s crucial to remember that healing is possible.

VA Support is Available—And It Works

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) understands that healing after MST is a unique and personal journey. That’s why VA offers free, confidential, tailored care for MST survivors, regardless of when the trauma occurred. You do not need documentation or prior reporting of the MST to receive help.

Every VA healthcare facility has an MST Coordinator dedicated to connecting survivors with specialized care, including counseling, treatment for physical and mental health conditions related to MST, and support in nonmedical settings through community-based Vet Centers.

Additionally, VA has developed the Beyond MST mobile app—a secure, private tool offering over 30 specialized resources to help MST survivors cope, manage symptoms, and improve quality of life. This app is free, doesn’t require personal information, and ensures complete privacy.
