Older Veterans often face social isolation, declining health, and mental health challenges that can increase their risk for suicide (VA, 2024). Research shows that Veterans who feel connected to others and are active in their community are less likely to experience suicidal thoughts. Belonging and daily engagement help improve wellbeing and reduce risk.
Housing that provides additional support to residents, such as the Southwestern Veterans’ Center (SWVC), can make a difference for Pennsylvania Veterans and their families. The SWVC in Pittsburgh is designed to meet residents’ basic needs from a long-term care facility, as well as to provide a welcoming home where Veterans and their spouses can receive continuous nursing care and regular opportunities for social connection. With close proximity to the City of Pittsburgh, it also provides residents with easier access to city amenities and cultural events that build on those offered in the housing itself. Joe Lawler, Assistant Director of Nursing at SWVC and Veteran, indicates in a recent video that the SWVC team takes pride in their care and focuses on making residents feel at home. The staff provides daily support, health care, and a community that helps Veterans stay engaged and connected. Residents enjoy programming including movie nights, bingo games, ice cream socials, carnival days, and outdoor time in the gazebo or on the putting green. The activities department even organizes golf outings. These programs help residents maintain friendships and enjoy a full and meaningful life.
Support for Veterans and Families
Many Veterans find it hard to stay connected after leaving military service. Supportive communities like SWVC give Veterans a place to belong and maintain purpose and connection. These are important factors that help lower suicide risk and improve overall health (VA, 2024). Families choosing long-term care want to know their loved ones will be safe, supported, and comfortable. SWVC offers a full range of care and activities for Veterans and their spouses. Lawler indicates that this helps families feel confident that their loved ones have the support and engagement they need.
