Description:
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) rarely occurs on its own yet comorbid conditions can complicate treatment and impact treatment outcomes. In this lecture, we will learn about two common co-occurring conditions. We will discuss the comorbidity of PTSD and substance use disorder (SUD). SUD is one of the most prevalent comorbidities among those with PTSD. Topics will include why these two disorders often co-occur and how those who have both differ from those who have either PTSD or SUD in terms of their physical and mental health and treatment outcomes. We will review research on how to effectively treat those who have both PTSD and SUD. The focus of the lecture will be on clinical strategies to use when treating clients who have PTSD+SUD.
